Quilt Book Review – FOLK-ART FAVORITES: Quilts from Joined at the Hip

FOLK-ART FAVORITES: Quilts from Joined at the Hip; That Patchwork Place; Martingale & Company; 80 pages; 2009.

The minute this book arrived in the mail, I was quite taken by it. Before I even opened the book, the cover quilt caught my eye with it’s bright, cheery, b958_mediumperfect-for-scraps look. This book is “folk art” but with a modern twist, with 12 projects – including a full-sized quilt, four seasonal door banners, pillows, and a wonderful sampler wall hanging.

For me, I want any book about quilting to be diverse in it’s offerings and not require a certain line of fabrics to accomplish the look of the projects inside -- and that’s exactly what this book brings to it’s reader. Designs are easy enough for an advanced beginner, but unique enough to offer quilters of any experience a sense of accomplishment when any of these projects are finished. These are projects that are not overly time-consuming. You will have plenty of time to complete the 4th of July door banner for the upcoming holiday.

Overall, FOLK-ART FAVORITES offers a well-rounded group of patterns with easy to understand instructions. Although the Folk-Art title might put off some of the more modern quilters, don’t let it. These are Folk-Art with a modern twist designs that should appeal to all quilters.

Sounds like a keeper! I like a pattern that doesn't demand a particular fabric line or style.

Sounds like a great book. Nice web site.

I just love patterns that you can pick your own fabrics, I like to use what I have on hand expecially in the summer months when my income is cut in half and I cannot afford to purchase "just the right fabric".

This seems like a nice book, and I would love to make a 4th of July quilt as is it our year to host the neighborhood party!

Thank you for this opportunity to win this book. I love your site, I am all about quilting on a budget!

I love the flowers on the front of that book. I was thinking about doing something similar for a sort of wall hanging to go over my bed. Actually, I was thinking of something more complicated, but I love the look of this one too. And maybe simpler is better. :-)

I like both--choose my own fabrics AND have a sample to look at cuz sometimes color choices change the way a pattern looks and I'm not always "hip" to that. I like that it's folk with a modern twist. Hope to win it and try something out.

The front of the book would attract me also. I really enjoy folk art books. They usually have a lot of appliqui patterns. I like to appliqui but use newer type fabrics. Good that this book doesn't just use fabrics in certain lines, I like to mix them up and rarely buy my fabric in "lines".

I like the cover quilt. I've not experimented much with fusible applique, but would like to. I'd be able to turn out a few more wallhangings and table runners that way. Looks like a contemporary folk art book....thanks

The quilt on the cover would've gotten me intrigued enough to enter the giveaway but your review completely convinced me. Folk art with a modern twist sounds great!

I also dont really care for books full of specific patterns for certain lines of fabrics. This one sounds good!

I like the idea that the quilts can be made using my stash/scraps and not a particular fabric line. I like primitive quilts. Would love to see what these fabulous designers do with "modern primitive."

Thanks for all your reviews and recommendations!

Hello, if the cover quilt is typical of the patterns in this book, I would love to have it. Of course, I would use my stash fabrics to make quilts from it! Dinah

I previously purchased a pattern from Joined at the Hip and remember it for it's clear directions and details. I also remember loving many of their designs so I look forward to seeing this book. Thanks for the opportunity with your giveaway.
